Honoring Service-Based Colleges: A Veterans Day Reflection

Recognizing the Many Paths to Purpose and Service

Every November 11th, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have worn the uniform of the United States. Their service, sacrifice, and courage represent the very best of what this country stands for.

As someone who has spent my career working with student-athletes and families, I’ve always admired those young men and women who choose to serve through military academies, maritime universities, and service-oriented institutions. These student-athletes don’t just chase personal goals; they commit to something bigger than themselves.

When most people think of service-based colleges, they picture the major military academies - Army (West Point), Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. These are incredible institutions that have produced some of the finest leaders our nation has ever known.

But there are many others that deserve recognition. Schools that offer an exceptional education, unmatched discipline, and pathways to some of the most rewarding and respected careers imaginable.

A Look at Other Service-Focused Institutions

Here are just a few schools that combine service, leadership, and opportunity in extraordinary ways:

  1. United States Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point, NY) – Preparing leaders for service at sea and in transportation industries critical to national security and global commerce.
  2. Norwich University (Vermont) – The oldest private military college in the U.S., blending tradition, academics, and service across all branches.
  3. The Citadel (South Carolina) – Known for its rigorous academics and disciplined leadership training, producing graduates who lead in both military and civilian life.
  4. Virginia Military Institute (Virginia) – A historic institution where character, honor, and academics meet at the highest level.
  5. Maine Maritime Academy (Maine) – Training future mariners, engineers, and logistics experts who keep global trade and defense operations moving.
  6. Massachusetts Maritime Academy (Massachusetts) – Offering programs in marine engineering, emergency management, and energy systems, essential fields of service and infrastructure.
  7. Texas A&M Maritime Academy (Texas) – Combining maritime training with leadership development through the Corps of Cadets.
  8. SUNY Maritime College (New York) – A leader in producing officers, engineers, and professionals serving the maritime and transportation industries.
  9. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Florida & Arizona) – Educating future pilots, aerospace engineers, and aviation leaders who serve both in uniform and in vital civilian capacities.
  10. Florida Institute of Technology (Florida) – Known for its programs in engineering, technology, and aviation — all leading to critical service-based roles.

These schools may not all carry the same national spotlight as the traditional military academies, but their missions and outcomes are just as inspiring. They represent an alternative path, one that blends service, discipline, and exceptional career outcomes.

The Real Return on Investment (ROI): A Future of Purpose and Reward

While athletic scholarships and “full rides” often dominate conversations about college affordability, few opportunities deliver a greater long-term return on investment than service-based education.

Graduates of these institutions often enter careers that are not only financially rewarding but deeply fulfilling. They go on to lead in aviation, engineering, defense, logistics, maritime operations, and public service, all while carrying the same sense of purpose that drew them to serve in the first place.

In many ways, these schools redefine the meaning of “scholarship.” The reward isn’t just what you save in tuition, it’s what you gain in leadership, direction, and impact.

A Salute to Those Who Lead, Learn, and Serve

To all our veterans, thank you for your courage, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to this nation.

To the students currently attending or aspiring to attend one of these incredible institutions, your path might look different, but your purpose is clear. You represent the best of what’s possible when service and education come together.

And to the families supporting these young men and women, thank you for helping raise leaders who choose a life of meaning, service, and excellence.

On this Veterans Day, may we remember that leadership, honor, and service aren’t just words, they are values that shape the future of this country, one student-athlete at a time.
